This item is illustrated and described in the popular David Gordon book"Equipment of the WWII Tommy" on page 41. They are described as being used for carrying mortar and P.I.A.T. equipment. They could also be used to carry two 5 gallon water or fuel cans. Or any other pair of containers that had a handle on the top of a balanced location. The harness is essentially two long brace straps, with a two inch piece of webbing connecting them(forming a yoke) At the ends the straps can buckle back onto themselves, enabling things to be carried. These are also known by many people as'Bren Tripod Carrying Straps' although their official designation is"Harness, ... moreInfantry, Carrying" We know this, because years ago we had a few dozen of them, and that was the description on the label on the hessian sacks which contained them. Big Lot of T AIL Set s& P arts For Saddle Horses Here's a great lot for any show barn! Please excuse my ignorance and look at all the pictures. I am beginning to learn the tail setting process but do not know all the names for these pieces. The items came out of a well-known show barn in the American Saddlebred Capital of the World. Everything is good quality and nicely made of substantial materials. It is horse/ full sized. This is all older tack that was stored away as parts and hasn't been used for a few years. The leather has some cracks and marks(name written in Sharpie on a couple pieces) but is soft and supple after just a light and quick wipe down with glycerin. Please look at all the pictures because it is inevitable that I will forget something. I'm going to try to describe the items corresponding with the main picture. ... more1) Crupper/ Bustle with red vet wrap- repaired with electrical tape. Leather is stretched and soft, rusty roller buckle 2) Two misc tail set straps- leather with rings in the middle. Each strap has a snap on one end, wrinkling& crackling, discolored hardware 3) Misc tail set/ bustle strap- broken strap but has a wool/felt pad 4) Hind/ side tail set strap- three straps that connect to a ring. Each strap has a snap end but one snap is snapped to another because it won't open 5) Crupper strap- Fennell's brand. Missing the crupper cup, has been shortened and holes punched 6) Surcingle/ back pad with attached breast strap- good shape overall. Nicely padded, white peeling in places, solid for use 7) Surcingle/ back pad- identical to the other one but more used. Billets shortened and one missing 8) Two breast collars/ straps for tail sets- padded leather with cracking and electrical tape on straps This is a lot of leather that I'm sure will be useful for someone! I'm helping clean out the barn and sending the items off to new homes. Please don't expect brand new items in perfect condition. Everything has been well-used for training and everyday use/abuse.

Up for auction is a wonderful set of primitive/antique leather horse/carriage straps. Each measures 77" in length. Overall these straps are in great condition considering their age and years of use. A few areas of breaks in leather as seen in pictures. The craftsmanship is supurb. The straps are adjustable using meal device as shown. Unsure of actual date but guessing late 1800's. I do not know alot regarding antique horse straps but perhaps these were used as tug straps? What great authentic pieces to add to any western/horse collection.
