The leather does have some dark marks and is cracked in several places. Please check out the photos. The buckle over the top will not hold since leather can been cut short. The top wants to stay open but I think can be trained to stay closed again. The handle has significant wear and the leather has worn off in spots. The top flap of the basket does have a measuring ruled on the leather. Please check out the photos, I have take a lot to capture all the wear on this basket. I spent the weekend digging through my in-laws' basement. Their family operated a bait and tackle store for almost 70 years. This was the second of my special finds. An antique/vintage fishing creel wicker and leather basket. It has a clasp which resembles a fish. I've included many pictures so you can see the good condition this piece is in. I have not done anything to it as far as cleaning, etc. This is exactly as I found it. Bottom width is 11-3/4" 9" wide across top, and is approximately 7" in height. Vintage Original Wicker Leather Fly Fishing Trout Fish Creel Basket w/Pouch This came from a massive fishing estate where everything was over 80 + years old. Not sure on the date of this item. The only markings are Made In British Hong Kong. That would make it fall in between 1841-1997 Not much help! Condition is fair: The wicker is perfect. It has all of its straps. Including the shoulder strap witch is almost always missing or broken. The leather has a tear in the top of the basket and the leather handle has some small tears from were the stitching came undone.
