Vintage Antique Leather Split Woven Willow Wicker Fly Fishing Creel Basket VGC
Up for auction is a very nice split willow and leather fishing creel from early 1900's. The only real issue I see with this piece is the leather closure strap is broke. Although it is present and will be included for possible repair. Otherwise the basket is tight with little to no damage. The leather on the rest of the creel looks to be in very good condition as well. Slight discoloration inside on the bottom which just gives it credibility. Good luck.

Antique Split Willow Fishing Creel Basket Leather Hinges
This antiques fishing creel has a dark patina that has come from years of use. It is a fine tightly-weaved split-willow basket fastened to an interestingly shaped bottom. The back side of the bottom has a nice curve to it. It measures 11" wide x 7.5" deep x 9" high.The hinges and the closure are both leather. The closure works like this: the leather strap goes over a wire loop and then the clip fastens through the loop. This is a primitive arrangement but I cannot see that there ever was any other closure. It has one break in one piece of the willow on the top edge of one side as shown in the pictures. It in no way diminishes the looks of this creel. This would make a wonderful decorating piece filled with flowers. Dishtowels, wash cloths, etc or used to store items anywhere in your home. Made in Japan for the American market- circa 1920/1930. Approximately 9" tall with 15" wide base. Conditions is Very Good with very little basket damage and light to moderate leather wear. For your consideration is a split willow and leather trimmed fishing creel dating back to the 1930’s. It comes complete with rear handle and shoulder strap. This is a good usable item but it would best serve as a fishing lodge décor item. The creel measures approximately 14-1/2” across the bottom. 6” wide at base and 8” tall at the back. The condition of the creel is very good to near excellent. It shows a rich patina and has only one strand of willow that has broken. The thin leather straps that latch the lid to the creel and the straps that hold the shoulder strap on are old. Have some breakage and are bridle. This would not be expensive to replace if one so desired but it would be better off left as authentic to the item. NICE CLEAN EARLY BIG RIVET TOOLED LEATHER SPLIT WILLOW BASKET CREEL
Here's a nice clean condition Big Rivet tooled leather split willow basket creel. These are early 1900-1920 creels I believe to be made in San Francisco perhaps by Ellery Arms. I have five or six of these and have seen a number of others but never a marked one. The distinguishing characteristics of these are the large 9/16 inch diameter brass rivets used to mount the straps& buckle. The leather sandwich used on the handle and the lightly stamped tooling used as decoration. I have similiar creels marked Ellery Arms but have not seen one of these marked. The basket on this one hads only minor breakage and is nice and clean. The leather is very nice and while showing a little wear here and there is still nice and flexible. It's bound with tooled cow hide leather and comes with a nice padded cow hide leather shoulder strap with matching ... moretooling. It's 13 inches wide at the widest point with a flat back. Fine example of a scarce creel for the collector. I've been collecting creels for years and just recently realized I'm totally out of space to display them. I counted them a couple of weeks ago and find that I have over 400 of them. I guess I've got to move a few of them on down the road so my wife and I will have enough space to move around in the house a little. Of course I'm exagerating a bit but you can imagine how much space that many creels takes up. I'll list a few creels today and more periodically as my schedule permits. This is a very interesting and unique creel. Someone has taken a high quality 1/2 leather top split willow basket creel and added a George Lawrence pocket on the front of it. This is not a George Lawrence creel but is a really interesting a functional hybrid. The creel is leathered with cow hide leather. The basket has no breaks and the leather is all in good shape. The basket is 15 inches wide at the widest point and has a curved back to fit the hip. It comes with a complete model 1 1/2 George Lawrence shoulder strap. The creel was made about 1935 or so and the pocket added later. Vintage wicker fishing creel with leather straps. Binding and buckle. There is a hole in the top to slide the fish in or to grab bait or fishing tackle. The wicker is I believe split willow and in the French weave from the 1920's it is in nice shape as is the strapping and the bindings. Vintage Fishing Creel. Good Leather trim with use wear. Looks to be split bamboo. Not an expert. Had bought this used back in the 50s.Been displayed with other fishing items since. Time to downsize. Measures 14" Long X 5" wide on the bottom, top is 12" long X 7" wide. front is 6 3/4" Tall then graduates to approx. 9" The arm straps are apart at the leather. The front leather pouch has a strap that had disconnected. The leather does have wear. It looks like this creel has been used a lot but still in fair condition considering the age. This is a very nice clean split willow fishing creel with leather reinforcements and harness. There is no breakage in the willow. And it is still in useable condition. This creel is from Portland. Oregon, but I'm not sure of the maker. There are no markings that would indicate maker or time of manufacture. Since the front closure strap was missing when I found the creel. I have replaced this piece. I also replaced the leather tab that holds the buckle for the lid strap closure. But retained the original buckle. There is some cracking on the leather straps of the harness. But it is still strong enough to use. All the leather has been conditioned with good quality leather conditioner. It measures approximately 9" tall at the tallest point. The top measures 12" across and it is 15" in width at the bottom. Front to back measurements ... moreare 6.5" at the top and 6.75" at the bottom. This is a handsome. This is a Great Vintage looking split willow also called French weave fly fishing creel from the 1940's era. It has leather trim and a leather pouch with two snaps and readable 9" ruler. It has developed a nice patina over the years. The leather straps and harness are still intact and are in a good vintage condition. Great decorator piece to show with your fishing collectibles. Picture#9 shows the right snap is off of the inside leather pouch but is connected to outside flap and shows well. This is a nice old willow woven creel for it's age. Made in England with a brass decoration on lid& leather string closure with tongue part of latch strap is missing. Hinge is held on by shoe strings and some willow wrapping. Back bone of hinge is broken and piece is included, see photos. There is a dent on the front where willow is damaged and one bone is snapped yet there. The rest of the basket is in good condition and can be rebuilt. Fly fishing Creel is 11.5" long 4.25" wide 7" deep at back and 5" deep in front. Lid is 5.5" wide and 10" long. This is a high-quality split-willow and leather french weave creel with full leather harness and tackle pocket still attached. Top-of-the-line when it was created. It measures approx. 15" x 10" x 5" Even though there are some problems with it, like the hook for the clasp having fallen off and the owner replacing it with a hook fashioned from wire in order to keep using the creel, and one side of the stitching of the tackle pocket having come out, the problems have come from real functional use and demonstrate the creel's"bona fides" as a trusted piece of equipment. At this point, it has earned the right to retire to the pastures of display, rather than any further use. MARSHALL WELLS?? BEAUTIFULLY EMBOSSED LEATHER SPLIT WILLOW BASKET CREEL - EX!!
Here's a beautifully embossed Marshall Wells? model 4 leathered split willow basket creel. I've seen five of these creels in 20 years of chasing after creels and four of them came with marked Marshall Wells shoulder straps(as this one does) None of them had any marking on the creels themselves other than the model numbers. Four of these creels were marked#4(15 inches wide) It is likely this creel was made about 1925 or so. It has a very nice tight weave basket- nice and clean with only minor breakage on the board on the bottom of the creel. It's beautifully leathered with cow hide leather and elaborately hand tooled. It comes a complete Marshall Wells tooled cow hide leather shoulder strap. Would make a fine display item or could still be used. I've been collecting creels for years and just recently realized I'm totally ... moreout of space to display them. I counted them a couple of weeks ago and find that I have about 500 of them. I've got to move a few of them on down the road so my wife and I will have enough space to move around in the house a little.
