The leather is very hard and could benefit from leather conditioner if desired. Both buckles work well. There is a shoulder strap attached that is also leather and is in decent condition as it is also slightly hard. The basket is super nice. There is an 8" measurement on the top for when catching your fish. The wicker is great. It has a great lodge look and I suppose with some leather conditioner could also be used for fishing old school.

Up for auction is a very old fishing creel. There is a anchor mark on the brass buckle and something stamped into the strap but I can't read it. It is 6.5" tall and 9" wide at the base. Leather is in very good condition. There is on break in the wicker on the back going around the frame. Most of the brass and rivets are greening or oxidizing. Beautiful piece for use or display.

Unusual Vintage or Antique Woven Reed Fishing Trout Creel Unique design
Acquired at a yard sale in rural N. Florida 1985.Unique shape as I have researched auction house sales and websites. But nothing anywhere similar in design. Constructed of woven reed. Base width at front is 16.25 in. Cover width is 9.0 in. Like most of these reed creel, this one does have issues. The original cane lid hinges are long gone and were replaced with old shoelace. The twisted cane loop in front that secures the lid to the body has broken and the corresponding connector on lid is missing. On the back there is a 3/4 in square of missing cane. The good news is that the double twisted loops on either side for a carrying strap are intact. You collectors will have a much better idea of the age of this creel than I, however my opening bid will reflect my confidence in the possible rarity of this design. It stands about 8 ½” tall x 13” wide at the bottom and 10” wide at the top x 5 ½” front to back. Lid has an opening for fish. Opening measures about 1 ¾” wide x 2 ¼” The creel latch is a decorative. Unique fish design consisting of a head, middle and tail made of metal(magnetic) joined by leather. The ring turn buckle, backed by a leather multi-pointed disc, is non-magnetic and might be brass. The latch is fully functional. The wicker is near perfect although old and likely brittle. The lid hinge which was also wicker has been repaired with some sort of strong twine. Wicker Fishing Basket Antique Early 1900s? I don't have the exact date of manufacturing but from research it looks to be in the 1900's. There is a wire at each hinge. Last 3 pictures, and I don’t know if it is original or an add-on. A few spots on the inside bottom. Feel like cloth. This basket is approximately 12"x 6"x 6" high. I bought this at an estate sale in Vermont, it had been hanging in a barn, the leather strap is a bit dry feeling, but the basket is in great shape with the exception of one piece that holds the lid is broken and replaced with a cable tie; the weave reminds me of an Adirondack pack basket. ANTIQUE FISHING CREEL-LATE 1800s'-FINE SPLIT WILLOW-FOR BROOK TROUT!
In 1981. This creel was given to me by an 86 year old RI gent, who remembers, as a small child, seeing his father coming home with a basket full of brook trout. The legal limit during this era was 40 per day! and shortly later, reduced to 20! In fact this little creel was called a 12 pounder, because that's about how much it weighed, filled with about 40 native brookies. The brook trout were even then only 6" to 10" with a whopper being 10" to 16" This small. fine, split willow creel, 11" W x 61/2" H in back, 5" H in front and 41/2" D) was used probably from 1880s' through 1890s' Creels tend to look old fashioned anyway. But not all of them are really antique. Whether surfing online or looking in an antique shop, some of the features to look for are the very narrow split willow for the body ... moreand the size of the square opening on the lid. This opening is important because in this case, it shows the creel to be made to accommodate small native brook trout. The opening here is 1& 5/8" x 1& 3/16" Stocked trout were gradually being introduced. Rainbow trout from the Western states, Brown trout from Germany. President Grant had appointed a U. S. Fisheries Dept. in 1874 to begin this practice. One story had an old Yankee farmer tossing the Browns onto the ground for interfering with his beloved brookies. The Kaiser in Germany at the time was Von Bronn. As the farmer would heave the fish over his shoulder, he would angrily exclaim, THOSE VON BRONN BROWNS! I've just moved from a 4 bedroom house of 38 years to a two bedroom apartment and have had to reduce a lot of belongings. But I would be happy to know this would go into the hands of someone who will appreciate it. If I were looking to buy it, I would put a saved search in for the old leather straps which would fit this sized creel. Sometimes miscellaneous things like that come along. Or, one may want to custom design the straps. It also looks good by it's self. I might add, if someone wins the

For your bidding pleasure. I just picked up this Antique Creel. I'm selling it in as found condition. I did rub a little water on the top of the lid so bidders can see it will clean up nicely. Besides the broken strap it is in very good although filthy condition. There is a little mold but as I said. I wiped some of this off easily. The strap looks like it should be an easy fix too.
