This basket ... morewas crafted entirely birchbark, and the sides and the top are decorated with a variety of stained birch bark appliques, all showing scenes from nature. On the front is a scene of pine trees with a rabbit, and the lid has two birds. There is an oval hole in the center of the lid to insert your catch. The basket is held together with rawhide lacing, and a it has suede shoulder straps, hinges, and front closure. A beautiful and unusual vintage basket! The basket. As noted, is really big. It measures a whopping 16" tall, and is 14" across at the base. This basket is in really great shape for its age, with the following flaws to point out: The basket is somewhat warped, especially at the top. This probably was present from the beginning, since a large sheet of birch bark starts reverting to its original shape almost at once. Some of the appliques are unstuck around the edges, and one branch is missing on one of the pine tree motifs. That being said, the underlying bark is in great shape with no cracks or breaks, the harness, hinges, and closure are 100% intact, as are all of the rawhide bindings. I have taken photos of all sides, and as you can see, the basket has a really nice display quality. A beautiful and unusual large birch bark pack basket! The leather does have some dark marks and is cracked in several places. Please check out the photos. The buckle over the top will not hold since leather can been cut short. The top wants to stay open but I think can be trained to stay closed again. The handle has significant wear and the leather has worn off in spots. Rare Pennsylvania Vintage Woven White Oak Trout Fishing Creel
Up for bid is a nice small Pennsylvania made white oak trout creel. The lid is 11 1/2" x 5 1/2" at the longest and widest points. The hole is 2" x 1 3/4" It was made by the Clearfield Sporting Goods Co. Clearfield, Pa. and it's my understanding that they were in business for decades and went out of business in the 1950's.It has a piece of veneer missing from the lid and its wired in one spot shown in pic 6 where the strap goes through and the left hinge right above it is worn through. Other than that its in really nice shape for its age. I couldn't find any like this one when I was researching it. Old antique wood. Wicker and leather material basket with hinged lid. Not sure but it resembles a sportsmen large fishing creel type basket/box. Inside is old wood, exterior is wicker and the top and straps is leather. Its very old. It appears that perhaps some of the mounting screws on latch and hinges may have been replaced at some point in time. The basket is old and has wear from age and past use. It is missing a top handle as the metal mounting knobs are there but the handle is missing. Not sure if the original handle was metal or leather or what? The box is 11 1/4" high, 12" wide and 7" deep. There is wear and some bending and fading from age but overall it is in pretty good shape. It weighs 3 pounds unpacked. Came from a very old local estate.

This is exceptionally strong and well made Splint basket creel with a hinged solid wood(not ply wood) lid similiar to some of the creels made by some of the east coast native american tribes. This one is probably not real old- maybe 40's or 50's. This one is very well made and in very nice condition and comes with a complete"Red Head" shoulder strap. This is an excellent example for the collector. I've been collecting creels for years and just recently realized I'm totally out of space to display them. I counted them a couple of weeks ago and find that I have over 400 of them. I guess I've got to move a few of them on down the road so my wife and I will have enough space to move around in the house a little. Here's an excellent condition wicker creel with a Quinn top tackle kit mounted on it. This was the standard configuration for the Quinn top creels and nearly all of them commonly seen were mounted on this same basket. As you can see from the pics. The top opens up and has several compartments for tackle, springs for snelled flies, etc. Quinn felt that a top like this was a much better place to store tackle than the standard creel pocket. These are uncommon in nice condition. This particular one has been leathered to provide a little protection for the basket. It's nearly 17 inches across at the widest point and comes with a nice flexible complete cow hide leather shoulder strap. An excellent example for the collector. Here's an Excellent Clean George Lawrence Tillamook Model 4AP leathered pocket model split willow basket creel. These Tillamook creels were introduced in a flyer circulated by Lawrence in 1931. The basket has only one small break of a wrap on the board on the bottom but is otherwise flawless and has a nice patina. It's solid and sound and the leather is in excellent shape and is nice an flexible and is all original. It's leathered with cow hide leather and embossed with the standard square rope tooling that appeared on most Supreme and Tillamook model Lawrence creels. It includes a complete. Here's an Excellent clean McMonies size 6 leathered split willow basket creel. These McMonies creels were beautifully leathered with heavy embossed cow hide leather- sumptuously bound like fine luggage. The company was here in Portland. Oregon and they were in direct competition with George Lawrence company and John Clark Saddlery and several others for the creel market which accounts for the excellent quality of their work. It has some slight basket breakage but only on the board on the basket bottom. The rest of the basket is perfect and retains most of it's original brown paint. It measures about 17 1/4 inches at it's widest point and is one of the largest I have seen. It's solid and sound and the leather is nice and clean and flexible all around. Has a very nice and complete matching shoulder strap. This particular example ... morewas probably made to be wholesaled and does not have standard McMonies mark as was the case with about 20% of the McMonies creels I have seen. Here's a nice clean John Clark Saddlery model 5 leathered split willow basket creel. Clark was out of business by 1928 when they were purchased by Marshall Wells. It is likely this creel was made about 1925 or so. It has a very nice tight weave basket- nice and clean with only minor breakage. It's leathered with cow hide leather and embossed with two different tooling patterns as is common with these Clark creels. It comes with it's original complete tooled cow hide leather shoulder strap. This is 16 inches wide at it's widest point. Would make a fine display item or could still be used. The metal stud that holds the handle has come out of place in the rear of basket. The buckle is missing from the front. The leather appears to have sueded over time. NICE CLEAN LEATHERED SPLIT WILLOW BASKET CHILDS CREEL
Here's a nice condition leathered split willow basket childs creel. The basket has no breakage and is a nice tight weave. The leather is nice and clean with no chipping or cracking and is nice and flexible. This was made about 1940 or so. It's leathered with cow hide leather. It includes a very nice complete embossed cow hide leather shoulder strap. This was made for a child and measures a touch over 12 inches at its widest point. These are quite scarce and desirable. Would make a fine display item or would make a fine gift for a young boy to put his Brook Trout in. I've been collecting creels for years and just recently realized I'm totally out of space to display them. I counted them a couple of weeks ago and find that I have over 400 of them. I guess I've got to move a few of them on down the road so my wife and I will ... morehave enough space to move around in the house a little. VINTAGE WICKER CREEL FISHING BASKET INTERWOVEN
This is a nice vintage woven wicker fishing creel basket. In really good condition. Has some staining inside bottom, will probably come off, but I didn't want to try, will leave to buyer. Basket top measures 9 inches, by 4 1/2 inches, bottom is 12 inches, by 5 1/4 inches, height is 5 3/4 inches tapering to 4 1/2 inches. It has a fish, and leather latch on front, first one I have seen like this. Not sure of exact age, but I have had for quite a few years. Opening is lid is 1 1/2 by 1 3/4 inches. Has handle on back. Unusual Vintage or Antique Woven Reed Fishing Trout Creel Unique design
Acquired at a yard sale in rural N. Florida 1985.Unique shape as I have researched auction house sales and websites. But nothing anywhere similar in design. Constructed of woven reed. Base width at front is 16.25 in. Cover width is 9.0 in. Like most of these reed creel, this one does have issues. The original cane lid hinges are long gone and were replaced with old shoelace. The twisted cane loop in front that secures the lid to the body has broken and the corresponding connector on lid is missing. On the back there is a 3/4 in square of missing cane. The good news is that the double twisted loops on either side for a carrying strap are intact. You collectors will have a much better idea of the age of this creel than I, however my opening bid will reflect my confidence in the possible rarity of this design. Here is a truly spectacular vintage creel most likely made in Japan in the late 1940's or early 1950's. The pictures do not do this creel justice. It is in remarkably clean condition with only a few small exceptions. The first is that there appears to be a small. Wicker loop missing at the far left of the lid. you really have to study it to notice it. The second is the leather hinges are of two colors- one light and one dark brown- They appear to be original and may have been a signature feature of the craftsman- not sure. This creel has very light wear marks and is eye catching. If you have a high end creel collection- this one should be in it.
